ETYMOLOGY

  • Putu mayam is made by putting rice flour batter into a special mold and squeezing it onto a bamboo basket covered with white cloth to form thin strands of rice vermicelli, which is then flattened and steamed in a steamer.
  • In addition to consuming with brown sugar, palm sugar or shredded coconut, putu mayam can also be dipped in curry or other Indian specialty sauces.
  • In the early days, putu mayam was eaten with small pieces of palm sugar, but it is now usually eaten with coarse white sugar or brown sugar.
