A term commonly used in Southeast Asia to refer to a passenger or passengers.

由来
  • 搭客一词，据说源自福建话（闽南话）tah kheh 和广东话（广州话、粤语）daap haak。
  • 在中国大陆，“搭客”通常指的是车辆或船只趁便载客，较少指乘客，但一般认为新加坡使用“搭客”的频率比“乘客”高。
ETYMOLOGY

  • The term “搭客” is said to have originated from tah kheh in the Hokkien (Minnan) dialect and daap haak in Cantonese. 

  • In Mainland China, the term is rarely used to refer to passengers. Rather, it usually refers to the action of vehicles or boats allowing people to hitch a ride. In general, the term “搭客” is thought to be used more frequently than “乘客” in Singapore.

曾先生说，随着手机应用越来越普及化，很多搭客都是选择电召德士，而不会在路边等。他估计，目前有多达70％工作都是电召。（《新明日报》，16/11/2018）
SAMPLE SENTENCE
Mr Zeng said that with the increased popularity of the mobile app, more passengers are choosing to book a taxi instead of flagging one down by the road.  He estimated that currently as many as 70% of his trips are on-call. (Shin Min Daily News, 16/11/2018)
