名词

  1. 位于新加坡中部,以欧南路(Outram Road)、新桥路(New Bridge Road)和广东民路(Cantonment Road)为边界。也写作 “四排坡”。
  2. 新加坡中央医院(Singapore General Hospital)的俗称。

DEFINITION

Noun

  1. An area located in the central Singapore, with Outram Road, New Bridge Road and Cantonment Road as its boundaries. Also written as “四排坡” in Mandarin.
  2. The colloquial name of Singapore General Hospital.

ETYMOLOGY
  • In 1819, the troops of the British East India Company were stationed in what is now the vicinity of Outram Park, colloquially known as “四排埔”.
  • The term “四排” (see pai) in “四排埔” is the Hokkien transliteration of the English term “Sepoy”, which originated from Hindi and refers to soldiers recruited by the British army in India. The terms “” and “” are paraphrases of the Hokkien term po (which means slope) given how the area is more elevated with a small hill.
  • Established in 1821, Singapore General Hospital is the first hospital in Singapore. It was originally built along Singapore River but was moved to Outram Road (the location of “四排埔”) in 1882, due to social developments and improvements in healthcare facilities.
  • Due to taboo in Chinese culture, some Singaporeans in the early days did not refer to Singapore General Hospital directly but used the substitute term “四排埔”.
