After serving full-time National Service (NS), male Singapore citizens and Permanent Residents become Operationally Ready National Servicemen (NSmen).

由来
  • 这项国家制定的公民义务由英国殖民地政府于1954年推行，并由新加坡政府于1967年修改。
  • 在新加坡，18岁的男性公民与永久居民必须参加国民服役，在服完为期22到24个月的全职国民服役后，他们会在战备服役日（Operationally Ready Date）转为战备军人。
  • 从1994年起，战备军人的英语名称从“后备军人”（Reservist）改为“战备军人”（Operationally Ready National Serviceman），主要是为了强调战备军人在前线防卫所扮演的重要角色。
  • 一般上，战备军人的回营受训周期为十年，包含三个阶段：第一年至第四年是培训战备能力；第五年至第七年是提高战备能力，并在第七年接受外部评估；第八年至第十年是维持战备能力与综合训练。
  • 要完成一年周期的回营受训，战备军人需要在4月1日至隔年3月31日期间，参与一项回营受训活动。回营受训时长规定一周年不超过40天。

ETYMOLOGY
  • Mandatory NS was first introduced by the British colonial government in 1954 and revised by the Singapore Government in 1967.
  • Male Singapore citizens and Permanent Residents at the age of 18 must enlist for NS. After serving 22 to 24 months of full-time active service, they become NSmen on their Operationally Ready Date (ORD).ƒ
  • “NSman” replaced an older term, “Reservist”, from 1994 onwards. This was to emphasise the important role NSmen play in the first line of defence.
  • In general, the in-camp training cycle for NSmen is about ten years, and consists of three stages. In the first to fourth year, they are trained for operational readiness. In the fifth to seventh year, they are trained to improve their operational readiness, with an external evaluation in the seventh year. In the eighth to tenth year, they are expected to maintain their operational readiness and undergo integrated training.
  • To complete one cycle of in-camp training, NSmen must attend in-camp training once, sometime between 1 April and 31 March of the following year. The in-camp training duration should not exceed 40 days in one annual cycle.
