DEFINITION

Noun

A green glutinous rice ball covered with freshly shredded coconut and filled with melted gula melaka. It is soft, chewy, sweet, and fragrant.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The name “ondeh-ondeh” originates from the Malay term ondeh-ondeh (also spelled as onde-onde or oneh-oneh). Ondeh-ondeh are also known as buah melaka in Malaysia.
  • One belief is that ondeh-ondeh originated from Malay or nyonya culture, but there is also a belief that it originated from a traditional Indonesian dessert called klepon.
  • Ondeh-ondeh are made using a dough of glutinous rice flour and tapioca flour coloured green with pandan and sweetened with sugar. The dough is formed into bite-size balls, each encasing a filling of small gula melaka pieces that melt during the cooking process. The balls are boiled until they float, then scooped out and rolled in steamed grated coconut.
  • In 2009, SingPost launched a set of stamps celebrating local desserts, with ondeh-ondeh featured among them.
