ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “新生水” is a paraphrase of the English term “NEWater”.
  • The idea of “NEWater” was first proposed in the 1970s, but was officially rolled out only in August 2002.
  • The Government’s main goal in developing NEWater is to prevent the potential problem of water shortage in Singapore in the future.
  • It is expected that NEWater will be able to meet 55% of Singapore’s water supply needs by 2060.
