Cars for temporary hire, which are typically models from Austin and much smaller in number than other taxis.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “伦敦德士” is a paraphrase of the English term “London cab”.
  • In November 1949, the first batch of London cabs began operating in Singapore.
  • At that time, London cabs were of the 1949 model from Austin.
  • Initially, the fare for the London cab was the same as that of ordinary taxis, which was 30 cents per mile.
  • At that time, any vehicle owner could apply for a taxi license to become a taxi driver. Drivers who bought London cabs remained a minority due to the high price tag, which averaged at $7,000 each. London cabs were a rare sight on the streets.
  • Currently, London cabs are the preferred mode of transport for people with disabilities. This is because the car has sufficient space inside for a wheelchair and also has onboard equipment to assist passengers in boarding and alighting.
  • In 2012, the government provided SMRT with $3.1 million in subsidies, which was subsequently used to purchase brand new London cabs.
  • Since August 2013, newly purchased taxis have made up the London cab fleet in Singapore. The total number of vehicles in the fleet has increased to 30.
