后港位于新加坡东北部，北起盛港（Sengkang），南达芽笼（Geylang），东临巴耶利峇（Paya Lebar），西至宏茂桥（Ang Mo Kio）。

DEFINITION

Noun

A neighbourhood in the northeastern part of Singapore. It is bordered by Sengkang to the north, Geylang to the south, Paya Lebar to the east and Ang Mo Kio to the west.

由来

“后港”这个名字源于福建话与潮州话 au kang。“港”在潮州话里指的是江河的支流。这个地名寓意着后港位于实龙岗河（Serangoon River）的上流或后方，或位于海港后方。
后港曾经是一片林地，并设有不少养猪场。到了1990年代，多数猪农已被安排搬至新建的政府组屋居住。
1979年，建屋发展局（Housing & Development Board，简称“建屋局”）宣布将在后港区建新镇。在1980年代，为配合政府推行讲华语运动，许多政府组屋新镇改为以汉语拼音命名，后港的英文名也从“Hou Kang”改为“Hougang”。

ETYMOLOGY

The name “Hougang” originated from the Hokkien and Teochew dialect term au kang. The word “港” refers to “river tributaries” in Teochew. Hence, “后港” refers to the area just upstream of or behind the Serangoon River, or an area behind the harbour.
Hougang used to be a forested area that was home to many pig farms. By the 1990s, most of the pig farmers had been resettled into newly built Government flats.
In 1979, the Housing & Development Board (HDB) announced plans to build a new town in Hougang.
In the 1980s, with the promotion of the Speak Mandarin Campaign, many public housing estates were renamed using the Hanyu Pinyin romanisation system. As a result, “Hou Kang” was renamed “Hougang”.
