• The history of Gurkhas in Singapore can be traced to the British colonial era. When the British colonised Singapore, these Nepalese soldiers arrived with them. The Gurkhas made significant contributions to the country during the Second World War (1939–1945) and the Japanese Occupation (1942–1945).
• In 1949, an official Gurkha Contingent was created, forming an important part of the Singapore Police Force. They were tasked with guarding Government officials and VIPs.
• Following the tradition from the colonial era, the Gurkha Contingent is led by a British officer. When they have completed their term of service, these Nepalese soldiers return to Nepal with a lifelong pension.
• Today, the Gurkha Contingent still plays an important role in Singapore’s law enforcement. For example, it was responsible for security cover during the World Trade Organization Ministerial Conference in 1998.

The Gurkha Contingent, part of the Singapore Police Force, celebrated its 70th year of formation. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong paid a visit to the Gurkha Contingent, thanking them for protecting Singapore over the years and contributing to the peace and order of the country.
