DEFINITION

Noun

A freestanding house not connected to other buildings or structures.

ETYMOLOGY
  • In Singapore, residential properties can be categorized into landed property and non-landed property. Detached houses, semi-detached houses and terrace houses are classified under landed property.
  • Compared to semi-detached or terrace houses, detached houses are usually not attached to other buildings or structures. They usually have their own parking garages, servant quarters and some may even have security posts.
  • Compared to other landed properties, detached houses take up more land, and hence are among the priciest.
  • There are relatively few detached houses in Singapore, but their styles are unique in their own ways. Some of the most prominent detached houses are the “black and white houses”. Built between 1898 and 1941, these two-storey houses served as residences for the British colonial government officers and civil servants. Today, these houses which are distinct in appearance and rich in historical value are leased by the government to foreigners in Singapore.
SAMPLE SENTENCE
In the early years, detached houses located in plantations were usually used as villas. After that, more black and white houses were built. Pre-war, the Art Deco style started influencing building designs. After the 1950s, the bungalows integrated post-modernism and deconstructivism elements in their architecture.
