由来
  • 英语 “correction fluid” 的意译。
  • 涂改剂于1954年由一位美国人贝蒂•奈史密斯•格莱姆 (Bette Nesmith Graham) 发明。原本想成为艺术家的她在德克萨斯信托银行 (Texas Bank and Trust) 任职秘书，在用新型打字机打字时常常打错字。她后来想起 “艺术家从不擦掉错误，而是涂盖错误” 这句话，便突发奇想，自行调配适用于纸张上的涂改剂，用来修改错字。
  • 当时，这种涂改剂称为 “Mistake Out”，后来改称 “Liquid Paper”。
ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “涂改剂” is a paraphrase of the English term “correction fluid”.
  • Correction fluid was invented in the United States in 1954 by Bette Nesmith Graham. Originally wanting to be an artist, she worked as a secretary at the Texas Bank and Trust, where she frequently made errors while typing on a new typewriter model. Recalling the saying that “an artist never corrects by erasing but always paints over the error”, she was inspired to concoct a fluid that could be applied on paper, to paint over her typing errors.
  • The correction fluid was initially called “Mistake Out”, before being renamed “Liquid Paper”.
