An area located in the northwestern part of Singapore. It is bounded by Sungei Kadut to the north, Bukit Panjang to the east, Bukit Batok to the southeast, Tengah to the southwest, and the Western Water Catchment to the west.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The name originated from the Teochew dialect term “港主” (kang chu), which translates as “owner of the port”. “港” refers to the riverbank, while “主” denotes “owner”, referring to the leader responsible for developing the plantations in the area. The character “厝” originally meant a house, but eventually came to also mean “town” or “village”. Hence, Choa Chu Kang was so named as it was a town developed by the leader of the area whose surname was Choa.
  • In the 19th century, the Sultan of Johor implemented the kang chu system in Singapore, and issued a deed to Choa Hock Yi for him to develop the land in the Choa Chu Kang area. As Choa became known as the kang chu, the locality was named after him.
  • The early inhabitants of Choa Chu Kang mostly grew gambier and pepper. By the 1960s, more plants were being cultivated, including pineapple, rubber and coconut. The area eventually became filled with fruit and vegetable plantations. Some residents also raised poultry or relied on fishing for a living. Today, these plantations and farms no longer exist in Choa Chu Kang.
  • In the 1960s, Choa Chu Kang was also home to many unique industries such as bullfrog, crocodile, and tortoise breeding farms.
  • Choa Chu Kang’s first housing estate was established on Teck Whye Road in 1977 by the Singapore Government.
