释义

名词

马里士他路(Balestier Road)的俗称。也称“梧槽大伯公”、“芋叶塘”、“芋峡塘”。

DEFINITION

Noun

The colloquial name of Balestier Road. Also known in Mandarin as “梧槽大伯公” and “芋叶塘”.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “乌桥” is a paraphrase of the Hokkien term orh kio. Orh literally translates from “”, which means “black”.
  • It is believed that the name “乌桥” originated from a black timber bridge across Whampoa River in the area around Balestier Road and Toa Payoh Lorong 6 in the early days.
  • Located in the middle section of Balestier Road, Goh Chor Tua Pek Kong Temple was built in 1847 and is one of the oldest Tua Pek Kong temples in Singapore. It was founded by a group of Hokkien sugarcane plantation employees. After several rounds of reconstruction, it retained the traditional Fujian architectural style and became one of the landmarks along Balestier Road. The road has also become colloquially known as “梧槽大伯公”, which is the Chinese name of the temple.
  • As yam was widely planted in the Balestier Road area in the early days, the local Cantonese also called this road “芋峡塘”or “芋叶塘”  meaning “yam leaf embankment”), or wu hap thong.
  • Balestier Road was named to commemorate Joseph Balestier, the first consul of the United States to Singapore. He served as consul from 1837 to 1852 and owned about 1,000 acres of sugar cane plantation in the area.
