ETYMOLOGY
  • The 4-Digit lottery (4D) is a form of betting by selecting a four-digit number between 0000 and 9999, hence its name. At each lottery draw, 23 sets of winning numbers are drawn, including the first, second and third prizes, starter prizes and consolation prizes. Bets on the numbers drawn will result in prize money.
  • Bets placed in the “Big” category are eligible for all prizes, while bets in the “Small” category are only eligible for the first, second and third prizes.
  • Gambling was prevalent in early Singapore, ever since the British colonial era. In 1959, the Government clamped down on gambling dens and betting houses.
  • In 1968, Singapore Pools was set up to provide an avenue for legalised gambling. Today, the Singapore Turf Club and Singapore Pools are managed by the Singapore Tote Board.
