释义

名词

位于新加坡中部一带,以摩绵路(Moulmein Road),马里士他路(Balestier Road)、跑马埔路(Race Course Road)及甘榜爪哇路(Kampong Java Road)为边界。

DEFINITION

Noun

An area located in central Singapore, bordered by Moulmein Road, Balestier Road, Race Course Road, and Kampong Java Road.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The area around Farrer Park was a swamp until the early 20th century, when the British colonial government began efforts to eradicate malaria by clearing the swamp and constructing drains. They subsequently built roads and residential areas on the same land.
  • As there were two white bridges and one red bridge in the area,  early residents referred to this area as “白桥” (meaning “white bridge”) or 红桥头” (“红桥” meaning “red bridge”).
  • The two white bridges were located opposite today’s Kandang Kerbau Women’s and Children’s Hospital, while the red bridge is under the present Kampong Java Flyover.
  • The term 白桥” (or pek kio) appeared in newspapers as early as October 1953. The residents who lived in the Singapore Improvement Trust flats in the area at that time formed an interim committee and established the Owen Estate Community Centre (now known as Pek Kio Community Centre).
  • As most of the roads in the area around Farrer Park, such as Cambridge Road, Oxford Road, and Owen Road are named after places in England, the area was also known as 小英国” (meaning Little England).
