• The area around Farrer Park was a swamp until the early 20th century, when the British colonial government began efforts to eradicate malaria by clearing the swamp and constructing drains. Roads and residential areas were subsequently built in the vicinity.
• As there were two white bridges and a red bridge in the area, early Chinese residents referred to this area as “白桥” (“white bridge”) or “红桥 头” (“红桥” meaning “red bridge”).
• The two white bridges were located opposite today’s KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, while the red bridge was under the present Kampong Java Flyover.
• The name “白桥” (or pek kio in Hokkien) appeared in newspapers as early as October 1953. The residents who lived in the Singapore Improvement Trust flats in the area at that time formed an interim committee and established the Owen Estate Community Centre (now known as Pek Kio Community Centre).
• As many roads in the area around Farrer Park, such as Cambridge Road, Oxford Road and Dorset Road, are named after places in England, the area was also known as “小英国” (“Little England”).

On the last Sunday of every month, a flea market is held outside Pek Kio Market & Food Centre, located in the vicinity of Farrer Park, with stallholders selling trinkets and old banknotes among other items. (Shin Min Daily News, 29/5/2016)
