In this Caldecott Honor Book, Kevin Henkes touches on the security blanket through a delightful story. 

Owen loves his blanket and carries it everywhere, even till it stinks. His mother tries many amusing ideas to wean him off it – including dipping it in vinegar – but Owen always seems one step ahead. When the time comes for Owen to go to kindergarten, it seems as if she should just resign to letting him drag that huge piece of cloth to school! That is when it strikes her that perhaps the solution is not to take the blanket away but to transform it into something else!

Review

This is yet another charming story, with Kevin Henkes’ familiar mouse characters, that deals with difficult situations preschoolers may face. Children will also appreciate that the lovely illustrations often add funny details not found in the text. This book is recommended for four to 44 year olds.
