Waterloo Street, commonly known to the Chinese as “四马路”, is bounded by Bras Basah Road and Rochor Road.

由来
  • 四马路原名为“Church Street”，华文名已无法查证，音译为“丘奇街”，意译为“教堂街”。因为这条街坐落于小坡，是多条主干道路中的第四条道路，所以俗称“四马路”或“小坡四马路”。
  • 1858年，市议会（Municipal Council）将这条街改名为滑铁卢街。这是因为莱佛士坊（Raff les Place）附近有条同样命名为“Church Street”（华文名为“漆街”）的街道，两条街经常造成混淆。选择“滑铁卢街”则是为了纪念1815年英国军事政治家威灵顿公爵（Duke of Wellington）于滑铁卢战役（Battle of Waterloo）中战胜拿破仑（Napoleon）。
  • 1998年，市区重建局（Urban Redevelopment Authority）将四马路观音堂前与梧槽路（Rochor Road）附近的滑铁卢街路段改为步行街。
  • 四马路有许多著名的地标，如四马路观音堂佛祖庙（Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple）、克里斯南印度庙（Sri Krishnan Temple）及马海阿贝犹太教堂（Maghain Aboth Synagogue）。
ETYMOLOGY
  • Waterloo Street was originally named Church Street; its Chinese name during this period is not known (Church Street might have been transliterated as “丘奇街”, or paraphrased as “教堂街” in Mandarin). The Mandarin name “四马路” means “fourth road”, and originated from Waterloo Street being the fourth in a series of parallel roads that run through the North Bridge Road area. As this area was known to the Chinese as “小坡” (sio po), Waterloo Street was also referred to as “小坡 四马路” (“fourth road of sio po”).
  • In 1858, the Municipal Council renamed the road “Waterloo Street”, to avoid confusion with another Church Street near Raffles Place. The new name was chosen to commemorate the Duke of Wellington’s victory over Napoleon in the Battle of Waterloo.
  • In 1998, the Urban Redevelopment Authority designated the stretch of Waterloo Street from the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple to Rochor Road as a pedestrian street.
  • Waterloo Street is home to many famous landmarks, including the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple, the Sri Krishnan Temple and the Maghain Aboth Synagogue.
