ETYMOLOGY
  • The scientific name of the turtle is Trionyx steindachneri. It is characterised by the tumour-like or spinous growths on its neck.
  • The turtle originated from Hainan Island and southeast coastal areas of China and northern Vietnam, and was later brought into Hawaii and Mauritius. The turtle is known as 甲鱼” or “山瑞鳖” in China.
  • The optimal living temperature for the turtle is 25 to 32 degrees Celsius. It will die of heat if the temperature is above 37 degrees Celsius, and will and will hibernate and neither eat nor grow if the temperature falls below 10 degrees Celsius. The turtle has no teeth and relies on its sickle-like upper and lower jaws to break down food and swallow it.
  • The turtle is edible and it is believed that its meat is beneficial to the human body. In Singapore, there are many dining outlets that specialise in boiled turtle products.
  • Since December 2020, vendors in local wet markets have been prohibited from slaughtering and selling live frogs and turtles due to public health concerns.
