DEFINITION

Noun

A belt of green open spaces that connects the parks and hilly gardens in southern Singapore via ridges and trails.

ETYMOLOGY
  • In July 2002, the Urban Redevelopment Authority unveiled plans for the first time to connect multiple hilltops and parks along the Southern Ridges. This was also part of Singapore’s Master Plan 2003, with the objective to build unobstructed bridges and walkways in this area to bring the public closer to nature.
  • The construction of both the 80-metre long and four-metre wide Alexandra Arch and the 1,600-metre long and 1.8-metre wide Forest Walk commenced in mid-2006, and completed in mid-2008. This entire project cost approximately S$13 million.
  • The Southern Ridges trail was completed and opened to the public in mid-2008. Currently, the ten-kilometre trail connects Mount Faber Park, Telok Blangah Hill Park, HortPark, Kent Ridge Park, and Labrador Nature Reserve via various bridges and walking trails.
