ETYMOLOGY
  • Singlish is also known in Mandarin as “新格利”, which is the transliteration of the English term “Singlish”.
  • Singapore is a multi-racial, multilingual, and multi-cultural country. When people of different ethnicities interact with one another, their languages begin to influence each other.
  • Singlish is a mixture of elements from Mandarin, Malay, Tamil, and Chinese dialects. This combination has given rise to a language with its own unique pronunciations, sentence structures, syntax, and vocabulary.
  • Singlish is a part of Singapore culture and has given Singaporeans a sense of identity and familiarity.
