  • 1989年,新加坡厂商工会(Singapore Manufacturers' Association,现称“新加坡制造商总会”,Singapore Manufacturing Federation)将“Singapore label”一词用于国外市场,主要是为了凸显新加坡食物和产品的品质,提升新加坡产品在国外市场的地位。当时新加坡蓬勃的制造业面临他国激烈竞争,又刚经历1985年的经济萎缩,建立品质保证的标签因此更显重要。
  • 1999年,时任总理吴作栋在国庆群众大会上提及将新加坡发展成第一世界的经济体时,便以新加坡航空公司(Singapore Airlines)、新加坡港务集团(Port of Singapore Authority)及樟宜机场(Changi Airport)作为“新加坡品牌”的例子,分别象征一流的航空公司、港口及机场。建立国家品牌的策略也配合当时推行现代服务业及制造业双双作为经济增长的政策,同时避免过度依赖面临成本上升压力的制造业。当时,“新加坡品牌”一词的英文写法改成 “Singapore brand”。
  • 2020年,为了提升新加坡品牌的知名度,同时凸显新加坡品牌与本地文化之间的联系,新加坡品牌办事 (Singapore Brand Office)和新加坡旅游局(Singapore Tourism Board)联合推出了“狮城之心”(Made with Passion)标签。在这项计划下,共有48个本地的生活品牌(lifestyle brands)获得该标签。
ETYMOLOGY
  • In 1989, the Singapore Manufacturers’ Association (now known as the Singapore Manufacturing Federation) used the term “Singapore label” in overseas markets, with the main goal of highlighting the high quality of Singaporean food and products, and elevating the status of Singapore brands overseas. This quality label was pertinent during a time when competition from other countries was growing in Singapore’s booming manufacturing sector, which had just recovered from the 1985 recession.
  • In 1999, during the National Day Rally, then Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong spoke about developing Singapore into a first-world economy. He cited Singapore Airlines, Port of Singapore Authority, and Changi Airport as examples of the Singapore brand, symbolising the first-class airline, seaport and airport, respectively. This nation branding exercise also tied in with the existing policy of developing the modern services and manufacturing sectors as twin engines of economic growth, while preventing overreliance on the manufacturing sector beset by rising costs. The term “新加坡品牌” was subsequently written as “Singapore brand” in English.
  • In 2020, to promote awareness of the Singapore brand and highlight the connection between Singapore brands and local culture, the Singapore Brand Office and Singapore Tourism Board jointly launched the “Made with Passion” label. Under this project, a total of 48 local lifestyle brands received the label.
