A tertiary institution for secondary school graduates to further their studies in Singapore, which focuses on vocational training.

由来
  • 1954 年，新加坡第一所理工学院，新加坡理工学院（Singapore Polytechnic）成立。新加坡还未独立以前，当时的政府为理工学院规划的大体方向是支持新的经济政策，即通过工业化制造更多就业机会。
  • 1978 年，新加坡理工学院从爱德华太子路（Prince Edward Road）搬迁至杜佛路（Dover Road）。
  • 1963 年成立的义安学院（Ngee Ann College），最初是由义安公司（Ngee Ann Kongsi）设立的私人大学。1968 年，义安学院改名为义安工艺学院（Ngee Ann Technical College, NATC）。1971 年，义安工艺学院的教书媒介从华语改为英语，同年四月开始欢迎非华族学生报读其课程。
  • 由于新加坡理工学院和义安工艺学院在教学内容和课程方面的标准趋向统一，理工学院这一名称也被统一，义安工艺学院在1982年改名为义安理工学院（Ngee Ann Polytechnic），成为新加坡第二所理工学院。
  • 1990 年，新加坡的第三所理工学院——淡马锡理工学院（Temasek Polytechnic）成立。
  • 因为理工学院毕业生拥有相当高的就业机会、毕业生升上本地和外国大学的机率也有所增高，促使政府增加学生数额，每年共有 2 万个名额供学生报名。
  • 1992 年，南洋理工学院（Nanyang Polytechnic）成立，基础学科为卫生科（Health Sciences），提供职能治疗（Occupational Therapy）、护理（Nursing）、物理治疗（Physiotherapy）和光照相术（Radiography）的专业文凭。
  • 2002 年，本地第五所理工学院——共和理工学院（Republic Polytechnic）成立，基础学科是体育与娱乐管理（Sports and Recreation Management）以及艺术。
ETYMOLOGY
  • The first polytechnic in Singapore, Singapore Polytechnic, was established in 1954. Before Singapore achieved independence, the Government planned for polytechnics to support new economic policies, which aimed to create more job opportunities through industrialisation.
  • In 1978, Singapore Polytechnic moved from Prince Edward Road to Dover Road.
  • In 1963, Ngee Ann College was established. It was initially a private university established by Ngee Ann Kongsi. In 1968, Ngee Ann College was renamed Ngee Ann Technical College (NATC). In April 1971, the teaching medium of NATC was changed from Mandarin to English and NATC welcomed non-Chinese students to enrol in its courses.
  • Due to the gradual convergence of teaching contents, standards and syllabus between Singapore Polytechnic and NATC, the term technical college was replaced by polytechnic. NATC was renamed Ngee Ann Polytechnic in 1982, becoming the second polytechnic in Singapore.
  • In 1990, Singapore’s third polytechnic, Temasek Polytechnic, was established.
  • As polytechnic graduates enjoyed good employment opportunities and increased admissions into local and overseas universities, it prompted the Government to increase the number of intakes for polytechnics, with a total of 20,000 places made available for students to enrol every year.
  • In 1992, Nanyang Polytechnic was established, with health sciences as its core subjects. This polytechnic provides professional diplomas in occupational therapy, nursing, physiotherapy and radiography.
  • In 2002, Singapore’s fifth polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic was established, offering sports and recreation management as well as arts as its core subjects.
