释义

名词

原渥路(Ord Road)的俗称。也称“王家山脚铁厂”。

DEFINITION

Noun

A colloquial name for the former Ord Road. Also known in Chinese as “王家山脚铁厂”.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “青桥头” originated from the Hokkien term chni kio tau.
  • The green bridge (“青桥”) in the name “青桥头” refers to Ord Bridge. Located near Clarke Quay and built in 1886, the bridge across the Singapore River was originally green, hence its colloquial Chinese name.
  • Ord Road was originally connected to Ord Bridge. The road was subsequently expunged to make way for redevelopment.
  • Ord Road and Ord Bridge were named to commemorate Colonel Sir Harry St George Ord, the first Governor of the Straits Settlements after it became a Crown Colony.
  • There was an iron foundry owned by Howarth Erskine & Co. at the end of Ord Bridge, hence it was also colloquially known in Hokkien dialect as “铁廊” (ti long), which literally translates as “iron factory”. As the foundry was located at the end of Ord Bridge that was nearer to the foot of Fort Canning Hill (“皇家山” or “王家山”), Ord Road was also colloquially known as “王家山脚铁厂” (meaning “iron factory at the foot of Fort Canning Hill”).
