DEFINITION

Noun

A construction material produced from slag or incinerator bottom ash.

(Ministry of Environment and Water Resources)宣布制作新生沙的计划。
ETYMOLOGY
  • In 2019, the then Ministry of Environment and Water Resources announced the plan to create NEWSand.
  • The main raw material of NEWSand is slag, a byproduct of the gasification of municipal solid waste.
  • Slag can be converted into two types of NEWSand through high-
    temperature gasification:
  1. Incineration bottom ash, mainly used as road base and road sub-base material.
  2. Vitrified glass-like slag, used in construction as a replacement for the fine aggregate in concrete.
  • Tampines is the first town in Singapore to make use of NEWSand. The 105-metre stretch of road between Our Tampines Hub and Masjid Darul Ghufran is paved with NEWSand.
  • NEWSand can be used to pave pedestrian walkways, to repair roads, and in 3D printing.
