释义

名词

伊斯兰教的传统节日,也是新加坡的公定假日。

DEFINITION

Noun

A traditional Islamic festival that is also a public holiday in Singapore.

ETYMOLOGY
  • Hari Raya Haji literally means “great day of the Haj” (the Muslim pilgrimage) in Malay; it is also known as Aidiladha (alternatively spelt as Eid al-Adha or Eid Adha) or the Great Day of Sacrifice. It is a Muslim festival that falls on the tenth day of Zulhijjah (the 12th month in the Islamic calendar).
  • Hari Raya Haji commemorates the Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail to Allah. Allah did not actually want Ibrahim to sacrifice his child, but only wanted to test his loyalty. In the end, Allah provided Ibrahim with a sheep to substitute as a sacrifice.
  • On this day, Muslims observe the Korban, a ceremony which involves the sacrifice of livestock. The meat is shared with family and friends, as well as the poor and needy.
