DEFINITION

Noun

A programme that enables drivers to rent cars on a short-term basis at affordable prices. Also known in Mandarin as “共享汽车计划”.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “汽车共享计划” is a paraphrase of the English term “car-sharing programme”.
  • Car-sharing programmes promote the sharing of cars, thereby saving users the high cost outlay of buying a vehicle. Some carpooling firms only offer electric vehicles (“电动车” in Chinese) for rent, hence such programmes are known as “电动车共享计划”, in which “共享计划” refers to a sharing scheme.
  • In the 1990s, Mah Bow Tan, then Minister for Communications, introduced car-sharing programmes.
  • The main purpose was to make better use of road space and reduce the number of vehicles on the road, which would reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions.
  • In 1997, NTUC Income launched Car Club, the first car-sharing programme in Singapore.
  • As of 2024, there were at least seven local car-sharing companies.
  • Generally, the charges for car-sharing services are based on the duration of usage (in minutes or hours), on a full-day rental basis, or a short-term rental basis (weekly settlement).
  • Some car-sharing companies also collect a one-time fee and a deposit for renting the vehicle.
  • Due to fierce competition, car-sharing companies offer various incentives to attract customers. In addition to discounted prices, an increasing number of operators have expanded into residential neighbourhoods, allowing customers to pick up the rented vehicles near their homes. This reduces the time spent on vehicle collection.
  • In 2020, due to COVID-19, some operators reported increased demand for car-sharing. Many chose to rent vehicles from car-sharing companies to avoid contact with others on public transport or when carpooling.
例句
