Colloquial term for amblyopia.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “懒惰眼” is a paraphrase of the English term“lazy eye”.
  • When there is a big difference in vision between a person’s two eyes, which cannot be corrected even with spectacles, the eye with poorer vision is known as a “懒惰眼”.
  • Lazy eye occurs when normal vision is not developed in childhood, usually before the age of seven or eight.
  • A common treatment is to cover the normal eye for several hours a day in order to stimulate the lazy eye and improve its vision.
