  • 皇家山，也称王家山，是新加坡一座历史悠久的山丘。现代考古学家在当地发现的金饰、中国瓷器与建筑源自于 14 世纪。由于新加坡是中世纪海上丝绸之路的贸易中转站，考古学家也在皇家山寻获大量元代的陶瓷文物。
  • 王家山脚指里峇峇利路（River Valley Road）一带，而所谓的 “铁廊” 是福建话 ti long 的意译，指制铁工厂。
  • 位于陈泰坊、克拉码头（Clarke Quay）和里峇峇利路之间早期原有一座名为莱利·哈格里夫斯公司（Riley Hargreaves and Co）的船厂。因厂内主要涉及到大量钢铁原材料，所以在福建话中也俗称为 ti long，即铁厂。由于该厂正坐落于陈泰坊的旁边，因此陈泰坊也俗称为 “王家山脚铁廊边”。

ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “王家山脚铁廊边” is a paraphrase of the Hokkien term ong keh sua kar ti long pinn.
  • Fort Canning Hill (“皇家山”), also known in Mandarin as “王家山”, is a hill in Singapore with a rich history. The gold ornaments, Chinese porcelain, and architecture discovered by contemporary archaeologists here originated from the 14th century. As Singapore was a trading transit point of the Maritime Silk Road in the Middle Ages, archaeologists have also uncovered many ceramic relics from the Yuan Dynasty.
  • The foot of Fort Canning Hill (“王家山脚”) refers to the River Valley Road area, and the Mandarin term “铁廊” is a paraphrase of the Hokkien term ti long, which refers to an iron manufacturing factory.
  • There was a shipyard named Riley Hargreaves and Co., located between Tan Tye Place, Clarke Quay, and River Valley Road. As it mainly dealt with large quantities of raw steel material, it was also colloquially known in Hokkien dialect as ti long (“铁厂”), or iron factory. Since Tan Tye Place was beside the factory, it was also colloquially known as “王家山脚铁廊边” (meaning “corridor beside iron factory at foot of Fort Canning Hill”).
  • Tan Tye Place was named to commemorate Tan Tye, a Fujian-born Kinmen businessman and leader of the Chinese community. Tan Tye was known for his businesses involving importing firewood and planting pineapples. He first opened a pineapple factory at today’s Tan Tye Place, which mainly produced the famous Istana brand of canned pineapples.
