• The First Charter of Justice was established on 6 February 1819, which coincided with the founding of Singapore. The Second Charter of Justice was issued on 27 November 1826, and the Court of Judicature was established.
• In 1868, the Supreme Court Ordinance 1868 abolished the Court of Judicature and replaced it with the Supreme Court of the Straits Settlements.
• On 2 May 1955, Tan Ah Tah became the first Singaporean judge to be appointed to the Supreme Court. On 5 January 1963, Wee Chong Jin became the first Asian to be appointed Chief Justice in the Supreme Court. This was a significant milestone in Singapore’s history, as all the Chief Justices since 1867 had been British.

Over the past five years, the number of cases appealed before the Supreme Court has increased by 56%. In consideration of the limited resources and time constraints faced by the Court of Appeal, the Government is considering restructuring the High Court to include a new Appellate Division managed by a group of judges.
