Noun

A constituency in which an individual candidate runs for Member of Parliament (MP). Also known in Mandarin as “单选区”.

由来
  • 在单议席选区里,每个政党只可以派出一名候选人,竞选国会议席。
  • 按照新加坡国会选举法 (Parliamentary Elections Act, Cap. 218) 第8A (1A) 条要求,在任何时候,全国至少需有八个单议席选区。
  • 除了单议席选区,新加坡也有集选区制度,集选区可竞选多过一个议席。
  • 1991年,全国有21个单议席选区。
  • 1996年,全国的单议席选区减少至九个。
  • 2020年,全国的单议席选区增加至14个。

ETYMOLOGY
  • In a Single Member Constituency (SMC), each political party may only field a single candidate to run for Parliament. SMCs are also known as single-MP constituencies.
  • According to the Parliamentary Elections Act, there must be at least eight SMCs in the country at any given time.
  • In addition to SMCs, Singapore also has Group Representation Constituencies (GRCs), in which a team of candidates runs together for Parliament.
  • In 1991, Singapore had 21 SMCs.
  • The number decreased to nine in 1996.
  • In 2020, there were 14 SMCs.
