DEFINITION

Noun

A collective term for meat rolls seasoned with five-spice powder, shrimp crackers, Chinese sausages and other Hokkien-style deep-fried specialty snacks.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “五香虾饼” originated from the Hokkien term ngoh heong hei piah.
  • “五香” refers to meat rolls seasoned with five-spice powder (also known as “五香卷”), a traditional snack from Fujian province, China. These are made with chopped pork belly, water chestnuts, shallots and various spices wrapped in beancurd skin and deep-fried.
  • “虾饼” is made with prawns in a batter consisting of flour, starch, shredded vegetables and spices, which are then deep-fried into a crispy cracker.
  • In addition to meat rolls and prawn crackers, this term can also refer to Chinese sausages, dried beancurd, fishballs and other fried snacks.
