Noun

Refers to military personnel. Also known in Mandarin as “兵哥”, which can be translated as member of the army.

由来

“阿兵哥”一词由台湾传入新加坡。
阿兵哥多为口语中使用的词语，或用于非正式场合中。正式场合中，则用军人或士兵。
1967年，新加坡实行强行征兵制，凡年满18岁的新加坡男性公民及新加坡男性永久居民必须全职服兵役两年（豁免者除外），被分配到新加坡武装部队（Singapore Armed Forces）、新加坡民防部队（Singapore Civil Defence Forces）或新加坡警察部队（Singapore Police Forces）, 成为全职国民服役人员（Full-time National Serviceman）。
服完两年兵役以后，退役军人会成为战备军人（Operationally Ready National Serviceman），每年可回营受训达40天，直至40岁或50岁。
退役军人若符合条件，也可签约成为正规军人或职业军人（Regular Serviceman）。

ETYMOLOGY

The Mandarin term “阿兵哥” spread to Singapore from Taiwan.
It is a term that is mostly used in conversation or in informal occasions. In formal occasions, the terms “军人” or “士兵” are used instead.
Singapore implemented compulsory conscription in 1967. All male citizens and Singaporean permanent residents who have reached the age of 18 must fulfil their two-year national service obligations (excluding exempted persons). They may be assigned to the Singapore Armed Forces, Singapore Civil Defence Force or Singapore Police Force as full-time national servicemen.
After serving two years of service, they will transition to become Operationally Ready National Servicemen, and can be called up for training of up to 40 days per year, up till the age of 40 or 50 years old.
If retired military personnel meet the requirements, they can sign up to be regular servicemen.

SAMPLE SENTENCE

With an “ah!” a male passenger collapsed suddenly onto the ground. The national serviceman hurried forward to check the passenger's pulse and ensure that he was still breathing. He tried to pry open his mouth after seeing the passenger froth at the mouth. The serviceman’s rapid response earned praise from all the other passengers on the bus. (Lianhe Wanbao, 12/9/2019).
