释义

名词

密驼路(Middle Road)的俗称。

DEFINITION

Noun

The colloquial name of Middle Road.

ETYMOLOGY
  • Middle Road spans across North Bridge Road and Beach Road,  two main roads.
  • Situated at the intersection of Middle Road and Beach Road, Kheng Chiu Tin Hou Kong temple and Hainan Hwee Kuan served as places of worship and community centres for the early immigrants from Hainan.
  • Following Middle Road (“海南一街”, meaning “first Hainan street”) are Purvis Street and Seah Street, which are known as “海南二街” (second Hainan street) and “海南三街” (third Hainan street) respectively. Raffles Hotel, a famous landmark of Singapore, is located after Seah Street.
  • Apart from the Kheng Chui Tin Hou Kong temple which is dedicated to Mazu (“妈祖”), and the Hainan Hwee Kuan that catered to the needs of the Hainanese community, eateries selling Hainanese coffee, cuisine, and snacks are also found at the three aforementioned streets.
  • In Middle Road’s Mandarin name, “密驼路”, “密驼”is the transliteration of the English word “middle”. Map records of Middle Road in Singapore date back to as early as 1829. The road was named after its location, which is along the axis of the European settlement.
