DEFINITION

Verb

A traffic rule that allows drivers to turn left at T-junctions when the traffic light is red, after ensuring that there are no incoming vehicles and pedestrians.

由来
  • 英语 “left turn on red” 的意译。
ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “红灯左转” is a paraphrase of the English term Left Turn on Red.
  • In April 1997, the Land Transport Authority of Singapore (LTA) implemented the left turn on redtraffic management plan.
  • This allowed motorists and drivers who stop at a red traffic light at T-junctions to proceed with the left turn as long as it is safe to do so, with no pedestrians and no incoming vehicles coming from the right even if the traffic light remains red.
  • Initially, the plan was only implemented at the intersection of Ang Mo Kio Avenues 5 and 10 and the intersection of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5 and Street 53. The “left turn on red” signs were installed to allow drivers to adapt to the new traffic rule.
  • The plan was scheduled to expand to more than 50 intersections islandwide within a year of its implementation.
