释义

名词

禧街(Hill Street)的俗称。也称“水仙门二街”。

DEFINITION

Noun

The colloquial name of Hill Street. Also known in Mandarin as “水仙门二街”.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “打火厝前” (in front of the fire station) is a paraphrase of the Hokkien dialect term pa hue chu zeng.
  • In the Hokkien dialect, “打火厝” refers to a fire station.
  • The Mandarin term “打火厝” in “打火厝前” refers to the Central Fire Station located at Hill Street, also known as Hill Street Fire Station. Thus, Hill Street is also colloquially known as “打火厝前” as the fire station faces the street.
  • Built in 1909, the Central Fire Station is currently the oldest fire station in Singapore, and its jurisdiction mainly includes the Central Business District and Chinatown.
  • It is believed that the Chinese character “禧” in “禧街”, the Mandarin term for Hill Street, is the dialect transliteration of the English term “hill”, which in this case refers to the nearby Fort Canning Hill.
