释义

名词

原位于美芝路(Beach Road)的克莱德台市场(Clyde Terrace Market)的俗称。也称“克莱台巴刹”、 “美芝路巴刹”。

DEFINITION

Noun

The colloquial name of Clyde Terrace Market, which was originally located at Beach Road. Also known in Mandarin as “克莱台巴刹” or “美芝路巴刹”.

ETYMOLOGY
  • It is believed that Clyde Terrace Market was named after Field Marshal Colin Campbell, 1st Baron Clyde, who commanded the British troops during the 1857 Indian Mutiny.
  • The Mandarin term “巴刹” is the transliteration of the Malay word pasar, which refers to markets.
  • As Clyde Terrace Market was constructed mostly of iron, the local Chinese residents referred to it as “铁巴刹” (literally, “iron market”).
  • Clyde Terrace Market commenced operations in the early 1870s and eventually evolved into a wholesale centre for fresh produce. Many smallscale vendors purchased their goods here and sold them at remote villages or smaller markets.
  • From 1977 to 1983, Clyde Terrace Market was progressively demolished to make way for the East Coast Parkway and other urban development projects. The vendors were relocated to Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre.
  • The Gateway, a pair of office towers completed in 1990, now sits on part of Clyde Terrace Market’s former site.
